Impact Myofunctional Therapy

/im’pakt/

have a strong effect on someone or something

What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy is an individualized program of static and dynamic strength and pattern retraining exercises of the tongue and orofacial muscles to correct maladaptive oral habits and help restore correct oral resting posture.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on the muscles of the mouth, face, and throat. By strengthening weak muscles, learning proper function and making behavior modifications, improvements can be made to breathing, speaking, chewing and swallowing.

What are Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders?

Orofacial myofunctional disorders are disorders of the muscles and the functions of the face and mouth.  These disorders may affect breastfeeding, chewing, swallowing, speech, jaw movement, facial and skeletal growth, orthodontic treatment, facial appearance and more.

What does a myofunctional therapist do?

A myofunctional therapist helps you rehabilitate the oral structures and much more.

As the “hub” of your comprehensive health team, I will complete your integrative health assessment, identify compensations, help foster competencies, address structure, function, and behavior, take the role of your health education educator, and create your collaborative therapy plan.

What ages should do myofunctional therapy?

We help toddlers and up.  It depends upon the age of the client, but we have something to help almost everyone.  From our Mommy, Myo & Me program to traditional 1-on-1 therapy, we teach you the tactics and tools to make a huge impact from the very beginning.

When should I start myofunctional therapy?

The sooner the better.  The longer a person has OMD’s, the longer it can take to learn and retain new, positive habits.  Anyone having a tongue-tie release should start therapy far in advance of the procedure.  We start therapy at age 4 and up.

How much is myofunctional therapy?

More information about our prices can be found here.  There are several options to choose from and recommendations will be made following a comprehensive myofunctional exam.  Payment plans are available, in addition to a 10% discount for payment in full as well as an additional discount for additional family members.

Do you take insurance?

Our practice is a fee for service practice, but we are happy to give you a superbill to submit to your insurance.  We do not directly bill any insurance or accept any insurance assignment.  We have had many clients use their flex account or HSA account to pay for therapy as well.

I have a referral, what is the first step?

The first step is to get your comprehensive myofunctional exam scheduled.  Make sure to follow the instructions on your email confirmation so that you can correctly prepare for the appointment.  You will send your paperwork as well as several photos and videos before the exam.  You will also need to locate us on Skype.

How much is the comprehensive myofunctional exam?

The current exam price can be seen when clicking on the schedule my exam button on the website.

The exam will be booked for 1 hour, and you will need to prepare in advance.

I have a limited budget, what can you recommend?

We don’t know anything about your case, but the Myo-2-Go program is a great option for adults.  We also have some great options for kids.  If finances are a concern, you will definitely benefit from the Myo-2-Go program, although it may not perfect for you…it will still be better than doing nothing.  You are also welcome to book an exam to make sure that you’re a good fit for the Myo-2-Go program.

How often is therapy?

It depends upon the case but our clients will have appointments anywhere from 1-4 weeks depending upon where they are in therapy.

How long are the therapy sessions?

Our therapy sessions are 15-30 minutes long.

How can you complete an evaluation online?

Very easily.  Myofunctional therapy is not a hands on therapy.  There is no need for us to see you in person to have you demonstrate breathing or oral function tests.  You will send detailed paperwork and lots of photos/videos before your comprehensive exam appointment.  With all of this information it is very easy for us to complete our work online.

How much is one session?

Our practice specializes in full rehabilitation.  We do not offer “one off” appointments because it doesn’t allow us to do our best work to help you.  By doing one or two appointments, we are not able to make any improvements.  At a minimum, our clients complete 12 sessions of therapy to account for all the areas of rehabilitation that need to be done.  After that, the client will either continue on with more advanced therapy or move to a DIY type of situation and continue working on habituation and retention independently.

How far in advance should I start therapy before a frenectomy?

Our clients are required to complete 6-8 weeks of pre-procedure therapy before we “give the green light” for a frenectomy.  Some clients with advanced needs require more time.
