Who Can Become a Myofunctional Therapist?

The two most common professions to receive advanced training to become Myofunctional Therapists are dental hygienists and speech therapists. Dental hygienists have a strong education surrounding the muscles and the structure of the mouth. Speech therapists are very familiar with the mouth as well. Their education and training is less focused on the structure and function of the mouth and more focused on articulation and precise placement of the tongue. Physical therapists are beginning to do some myofunctional therapy, as well as some dentists and doctors.

That doesn’t mean that your dentist or doctor are familiar with myofunctional therapy. Even though its been around since the 1970’s, it is just now gaining more momentum as more research on the benefits is conducted/released and more myofunctional therapists are opening up private practice.
