Why is there so much variation in myofunctional therapy programs?

The myofunctional therapy journey can be so confusing, and one of those confusing factors is that there is so much variation in the type of therapy programs.

I think the variation in myofunctional therapy programs comes from the fact that we are all trained differently.  Just as you would expect some variation in a dental treatment plan or a medical care plan, you will see some variation in your myofunctional therapy treatment plan as well.

In my practice, you have options when it comes to myofunctional therapy.  Because we are a global company with a mission of “effective, efficient, and affordable myofunctional therapy for everyone”, we are forced to have variation in our myofunctional therapy programs in order to be able to serve our people:  those with myofunctional therapy needs who want to make a massive impact on their life and wellness.

Variation with myofunctional therapy programs & your needs

I feel like you can’t even consider options until you have an exam and know what your level of needs are.  That in and of itself is going to lead to variation in your program recommendations.  There are many times when I do a free, 30-minute assessment with someone, and they sound nice and easy and run of the mill if you will. However, when we get to the comprehensive exam, everything is a lot different!

So when I get to the end of an exam, I take the information I have gathered and I consider a few things.  The most important thing to consider, after you already know what the needs are….is what are your goals for therapy?  Do you want to do the mac-daddy and do everything just right or are you just looking to eeeek by?

Variation with myofunctional therapy programs & your personality

Next, I want to know about someone’s personality.  Are they accountable to be on their own, or do they need an accountability partner?  Do they get overwhelmed easy? Do they have a lot on their plate, in addition to myofunctional therapy?  These are things you should think about too.  This consideration is going to lead to variation in therapy programs as well.

Variation with myofunctional therapy programs & your budget

All this information helps guide me to make the best recommendation for a person.  When I work with a client, I will tell them what I think the best option is and why. Here is where more variation in myofunctional therapy programs arise.   I have to consider your budget.  What good does it do me to give you all sorts of great advice, but not consider what you can afford?  For this reason, I sometimes give a second, less than perfect option, and sometimes I don’t. If I know that a person needs a comprehensive, year-long program with me and they want the cheap, easy fix…they will have to find someone else to take their money because I won’t do it….mostly because I like to sleep at night and because I know they are wasting their money.

Variation with myofunctional therapy programs & your myofunctional therapist

So, we’ve talked about variation in myofunctional therapy programs bases on needs, personality, and budget, but what about your myofunctional therapist?  Like I stated above, you will never get 10 dental treatment plans that are the same.  Ok, so very rarely.  I suppose there are times when a tooth can be so bombed out that every single dentist would say it needs extraction, but aside from some extreme cases, I feel confident in saying that there will always be some variation in dental treatment plans.

The same with myofunctional therapy. We are all different. You can’t compare oranges and orangutans so I encourage you to FIRST find that person that you know, like and trust…and go from there…without considering what every other Tom, Dick, and Harry thinks you should do.

Meet Carmen Woodland

I found this path of passion years ago as a dental hygienist.  After a stint in graduate school to earn my M.B.A., I decided that I needed to pivot.  My heart was no longer in scraping teeth, but making a much bigger impact on lives touched by myofunctional impairment.

My story is personal and close to home.  My sweet granddaughter was passed back and forth amongst doctors and therapists for years trying to figure out her speech, breathing, sleep, chewing and swallowing issues.  It wasn’t until I completed more training that I knew her problem was a significant tongue-tie. Bingo.

Fast forward to now.  I’m a crusader. A warrior.  A voice for those who can’t find theirs, or who don’t have one.

I left clinical hygiene practice to start Integrative Myofunctional Therapy.  It has evolved from a way to make a living, into an obsession!

I see clients all over the world and provide innovative, virtual therapy in the remotest of places.

In addition, I also

  • Teach other dental hygienists how to become myofunctional therapists through my Myo Mastery Program
  • Coach dental offices on how to implement myofunctional screening into the daily practice
  • Speak in various settings

I’m an airway provider for the Foundation of Airway Health, where I work diligently for the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of airway related disorders.

And last but not least, I’m a proud member of several professional associations that afford me the opportunity to learn so that I can help you.  My professional memberships include:
